An Affogato Social

An Affogato Social

Entertaining and get-togethers need not be stressful. If fact, your guests have more fun when you’re having fun, so why not gather friends for the grown-up and glam version of an ice cream social — the affogato social.

Affogato, which literally means “drowned” in Italian, is an amazing, elegant (and amazingly easy) dessert-and-drink-in-one that’s literally as easy as pouring espresso over ice cream. Which means almost zero work for you, but lots of fun and deliciousness for everyone.

Tip: With only two ingredients, it’s imperative to use the best quality espresso and ice cream available (or, of course, make your own ice cream!).

Read on for instructions on how to make affogato that will have all exclaiming “Viva Italia!”

1. Brew espresso (we used the De’Longhi Icona espresso maker).

2. Place 2-3 scoops of highest-quality vanilla ice cream or gelato into glasses or bowls. (While the classic version calls for vanilla, you can use chocolate, cherry vanilla or coffee ice cream or a sampling of various flavors for guests to choose from!)

3. Pour one shot of hot espresso over each serving of ice cream and serve immediately with a spoon. (Or, use about 3 tablespoons of strong brewed coffee in lieu of espresso.)

Optional: Let guests espresso themselves with toppings… A drizzle of chocolate syrup, a sprinkle of toasted hazelnuts,  a scoop of whipped cream, or a splash of rum!
